Planning Ahead, Living Fully: How Robin and Craig Zeck Found Peace of Mind at Oak Trace

For Robin and Craig Zeck, moving to a senior living community wasn’t about slowing down.

It was about planning ahead, making a thoughtful decision that would protect their finances, provide access to care if needed, and let them continue living life together.

Two years ago, they chose Oak Trace Senior Living Community in Downers Grove. As a Life Plan Community, Oak Trace offers independent living with access to assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation, and skilled nursing, all under the same roof.

A Familiar Place with a New Vision

When the Zecks decided to investigate senior living communities, they had been living in Aurora but wanted to stay connected to Downers Grove, where Craig had been principal at South High School. When they heard about Oak Trace’s major renovation and expansion, they decided to visit.

“I couldn’t picture where it was until we drove out here,” Robin recalled. “Then I realized it was where my mother had lived years ago when it was Fairview Baptist Home.”

During their visit, they toured the campus and saw the recently completed health care center. “It was really beautiful. That had a big impact on us,” she said.

Soon after their visit, they had an unexpected opportunity. “Someone approached us about buying our house, and we sold it right away,” Robin said. The timing aligned perfectly.

Planning for the Future

An important reality had shaped the couple’s decision to look into senior living communities. They did not have long term care insurance, and Craig had been living with Parkinson’s disease for more than 25 years.

“He had been doing really well,” Robin said. “But we knew that at some point we would need additional care.”

Oak Trace’s Life Plan model offered exactly what they were looking for. Residents can live independently while knowing higher levels of care are available if needed. Costs are predictable, often lower than typical market rates, and a portion of the expenses may be tax deductible.

“For us, it just made sense,” Robin said.

When the Plan Became Reality

Seven months after moving in, Craig’s health began to change. He needed more support, so he transitioned to skilled nursing within the community. Because of the Life Plan model, the move was seamless. Financial uncertainty was removed, and the couple did not have to face separation.

“What’s very nice is that I just walk over every day and pick him up,” Robin said. Craig participates in a Parkinson’s fitness class and a sit and fit exercise program. They attend programs together and regularly share dinner with friends.

“He’s basically doing everything that I am,” Robin said. Knowing that even when they’re not together, Craig is nearby and receiving excellent care brings Robin great comfort.

“You can’t put a dollar value on that,” she said. “I feel very blessed and fortunate that we’re able to live here.”

Living Fully

Robin has embraced the many opportunities of community life. She serves on committees and knits and crochets items for a resident craft sale supporting the benevolent care fund. Daily life is simpler, with no worries about snow removal, broken appliances, or finding a handyman. “Everything is taken care of for us,” she said.

Outings are easy and convenient. “If we go to a performance, they drop us off right in front, pick us up afterward, and take care of the tickets. We don’t have to worry about parking,” she said. There are also many performances taking place right on campus. “I’m sitting here in my home seeing wonderful entertainment,” Robin said. “It’s magical.”

She also praises the staff and leadership. “I’ve never seen an employee who looks like they don’t want to be here. Everyone is friendly and helpful.”

Advice for Others

Robin often speaks with people who think they can wait before moving into senior living.

“You’re always just one fall away from a potential health problem. Waiting for a crisis can limit options and create unnecessary stress. Moving earlier lets you enjoy the lifestyle while planning wisely for the future.”

Looking back, she says there is only one thing she would change.

“I would move in sooner. In my heart, I really believe it’s better to make a wonderful decision like this sooner rather than later,” she said.
