DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — Oak Trace senior living community in Downers Grove has been recognized as an Outstanding Business Champion Supporting Individuals with Disabilities in the Workplace by the Career Academy Alliance, a partnership initiative supported by the Parents Alliance Employment Project. The recognition was presented at the Be Inspired to Hire event held at the Hyatt Lodge in Oak Brook, honoring businesses that have gone above and beyond in creating successful outcomes for individuals with disabilities.
Commitment to Inclusion
Oak Trace earned the distinction for its role in hiring team member Carly Kauz, a graduate of Downers Grove North High School and its transition program. She then participated in the Career Academy Alliance’s training program for young people with disabilities. This combines classroom learning, simulated work experiences, and internships to prepare young adults for meaningful employment.
Carly was part of the inaugural year of the program’s work simulation component and began interning at Oak Trace in 2023. She was officially welcomed as a permanent team member in March 2024. Working under the supervision of Jessica Lazzara Cashman, Lifestyles Director, Carly assists with activities such as helping with Bingo, delivering newsletters and packages to residents, watering plants, and keeping the fitness studio tidy.
“Carly is a great addition to our team,” said Cashman. “She is not only helpful, but she brings great joy and positivity to the community. Residents smile when she comes into a room. She truly lights up the day.”
Community Connections
The partnership between Oak Trace and the Parents Alliance Employment Project grew from a community networking event where Oak Trace’s Human Resources Director connected with
Youth Program Specialist Taylor Selesky. “We wanted Carly to be somewhere she felt comfortable and confident,” Selesky said. “The Oak Trace team members were so kind and welcoming, and it was clear how much pride they take in their work.”
Growth and Independence
Today, Carly continues to grow in her role, working independently with her checklist and building confidence with each task. She says she enjoys the variety of her work, the friendly people, and the beautiful community.
“Oak Trace is proud to support inclusion in the workplace and to help individuals of all abilities develop skills and careers,” Cashman said. “Carly is an inspiration to all of us.”
